The First Ferry’s newly designed MW Café in Ras Al Khaimah is a theme-inspired, modern-day coffee heaven...

Coffee. Just the name is sufficient to make you think of that lip-smacking sweet or bitter (depending on how you like your cup of joe) beverage. Opening its first ever outlet in the Middle East, MW Café is the joint venture of boxer, Anthony Debruijn and ex-rapper of The Outlawz, Mutah Beale.

Celebrating undying love for coffee with the unadulterated, artistic signature touch of The First Ferry, the very nature of the coffee beans anoint the thematic of the interiors via a clever play of tonal variations of browns and beiges with textural nuances in form of unprocessed surfaces, wood and stone-finished tiles and bamboo and cane lounge-sque furniture that instantaneously connects the aroma and appeal of a cuppa with the ambience.

Spacious (approx. 1000 sq. ft. inside and 800 sq. ft. outside) and climatically designed, the café is fitted with floor-to-ceiling glass panes that slide open to enable cross ventilation. Anointed with old-school carte du jour highlighting the specials high above, the sole counter takes centre-stage, concentrating all the action in one place with a comfortable cover of 50.

Going outside, we see that the designers become a bit more creative with the exteriors. Located by the corniche, they’ve festooned this space with bamboo and cane furniture, serving as a spot to lounge and relax by the creek.

Lighting plays a key role in this project; the interiors comprise cage lighting installations; while blue cove lights break the methodical design, adding the right tinge of rebellion to the exterior space. Back-lighting is a favourite at The First Ferry and one can discover its presence throughout the project, right from the frames to the signage and the faux-ceiling areas.
