MVRDV designs a light-permeating hybrid facade as the first in a series of facade designs for the Kuala Lampur storefront of luxury brand, Bulgari…

Located in the heart of the buzzing Bukit Bintang district, and one of several offerings for luxury goods in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur Shopping Mall, the Bulgari flagship store stands updated with a striking concrete, resin and brass facade.

For over a century, Bulgari has set the pace for Italian style with a forward-looking, creative spirit that draws inspiration from the timeless beauty of Roman art, while giving it a distinctive contemporary touch. For this, its flagship store, design doyen, MVRDV imagines the luxury brand’s heritage, and experiments with traditional materials to anoint the store-front with a uniquely composed facade of concrete and resin, permeated by gold light to create a marble-veined effect.

Drawing from the brand’s illustrious heritage and its signatory cornice from its via Condotti store, which is a set element used asymmetrically in different locations over the world, the architects now combine it with an iconic marble façade reinvented and reinterpreted by material experiments. The result: a façade which by day is striking but organic; whilst at night, dramatic!

The glass of the façade is framed in brass and has an amber colour that fades towards the top of the building. Developed from a research-process in collaboration with Technical University Delft, and Tensoforma, who worked on façade production, this new product consists of Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC), which is cut according to pattern and its veins filled with golden resin for both interior and exterior facades.

Illuminated by amber LEDs, light permeates through the veins in the facade, making it resemble marble. A stainless-steel sheet acts as a base for the resin, with panel joints hidden and integrated into the vein pattern. Either during the day or at night time, the Bulgari façade achieves the desired translucent effect, emanating a warm amber glow.

MVRDV has developed a catalogue for Bulgari international storefront facades, a strategy that can be adopted for future stores, making them instantly recognisable and unique in any global location. Says Jacob van Rijs, co-founder of MVRDV, “Bulgari is a bold, glamorous, exuberant and undeniably Roman brand, so we interpreted these themes as key ingredients for an innovative facade.” The approach offers endless possibilities that combine sophisticated detailing with high-quality materials.
