How does one design a spacious home in a linear plot measuring 20 x 200 feet? Falken Reynolds Interiors highlights innovative design strategies to create space and serenity in one such Vancouver home…

Enlisted by boutique builder Moosehead Contracting, Falken Reynolds Interiors, and Randy Bens Architect design a family home to fit on a unique lot of size 20 by 200 feet (6m x 60m), which is typically the size of a back lane.

The team says that the unique site of the 2,200 square feet (204 square
metres) house inspired them to get creative with their design process and visually create more space. “For example, natural light was a big focus; so, we strategically placed 11 skylights to wash walls with natural light and draw the eye into the room, amplifying spaciousness using the technique of Atmospheric Perspective,” says Chad Falkenberg, principal of Falken Reynolds.

Standing-seam metal cladding accentuates the home’s strong, minimal exterior; while midway through the house, a courtyard brings light to its centre. Concealed storage in the interior corridors maximise functionality as the entry hall conceals mudroom storage, and a kids’ zone is acoustically removed from the main living areas. To ensure the home is fully equipped for a modern, active family, the kitchen is fitted with a large island that constitutes the social hub of the family.

Inside and out, the fresh palette of white and Nordic toned woods keeps the spaces feeling open. New LED technology, hardwood floors, linen curtains and bedding and diligently selected fabrics for soft furnishings as well as handpicked furniture exhibit distinct influences from Scandinavia, Japan and the Westcoast creating a style that Falken Reynolds describes as Canadian Nordic.

The home stands out with its subtle colour palette, clean lines, and details that are the hallmark of the designers.
