Play
Yet is a real-time, fully functional furniture game that is a reflection of a child’s
imagination and design…
French
designer, Stephanie Marin of Smarin Furniture Company has come up with a unique
and playful idea of a construction kit that allows children and adults to
arrange pieces of natural wood in such a manner so as to create their own style
of furniture. What’s more – you don’t need any nails, or screws!
Consisting
of simple elements such as oak planks, cork boards and beech sticks, Play Yet
is a large scale building set that is assembled using dowels and tubes.
Working
on the cue of a free construction system like Lego blocks that are a favourite
with a majority of children and adults alike, Stephanie transposed the free
construction principle to a functional furniture scale.
Each
element in the kit, small or big, square or rectangle, can be used in various
positions to create a new world of furniture - bench, stool, shelf, cabin, bed,
table, play house and bunk seating among others - and every time in a new style
and design. Its natural texture and flexible design allows the structure(s) to
adapt to any environment — home, office or larger architectural projects for
leisure or utility.
Keeping
in mind the accessibility for children, cork - one of the most polyfunctional
materials known for its lightness, elasticity, durability, waterproof nature
and sustainability; its anti-static, thermal, sonic and ecological properties is
selected as the primary material for this kit.

The highlight is a no-screw-and-no-nail policy. In fact, simple fixing elements and
basic stacking structure ensure that arranging and rearranging pieces in the
construction kit is extremely easy and a lot of fun.
“The
product line has involved extensive research to find the most polyvalent scale
so that it could be used to build any kind of furniture,” informs Stephanie.
Made from natural material that is left in its earthy colours, there are eight
Play Yet kits in total. The smallest board in the kit is 1560 mm x 210 mm and the
largest is 4810 mm x 210 mm.

The
USP of the construction kit is in its caring and sustainable design that comes with
no user manual for a pre-decided and pre-conceptualised piece of furniture.
Instead, it allows the users - kids or adults - the freedom of interpretation
of usage. It allows them to imagine!
