Feeding on the quest for a unique dining experience, Yunnan, China’s Pu Zao Restaurant is a cocoon of primitive pleasures…

Breaking free from conventional design typology, Interior designer, Xu Xu-Jun of Yiduan Shanghai Interior Design has simulated the feel of a leisurely row-boat ride lulling along a meandering river as the thematic for the restaurant in Kunming, Yunnan.

Using the starting point as water, which the designer, very quirkily arrives at from the premise that “a good diet is a source of life; no diet without water; water makes people associate with boats; and, presumptuously, eating on a boat is a lovely thing!” he designs tables that look like boat bottoms, some with partitions; and keeping the ambience in sync, creates an emblematically rustic envelope, augmented by the cropped simulation of hillside cultivation.

The seating arrangement is randomized with careful selection of tables for two’s, four’s and more. A few live row boats constitute live-wire entertainment as they underline the direct connect to the thematic. A staggered floor anoints the design vocabulary of a riverfront, with pebbles in the flooring, taking one close to the riverbed feel. The space is planned along meandering spaces that add on to milieu.

The ambience with its random live boats builds on the feel of Jiangnan water towns, evoking a sense of romance.  The huge boat mounted as a highlight and mud-wall terraces on all sides, together with natural scenarios such as that of the elevated dining area on mountain cableways, rough granite handrail etc… reflect and fit the theme, which seems to reinstate old Chinese wisdom - cook delicious food with a simple and sincere heart!
