A picture can speak a thousand words! Design Thinker and Crusader, Hemant
Suthar reviews the book ‘Visual Thinking’ by industrial designer, Willemien
Brand…
As a young
boy, if I asked my dad for anything - be it a pencil or a bike - he would first
ask me to draw it. Later at NID, I met Prof. MP Ranjan, who used to ask us
to draw our ideas to organise our thoughts and improve our ability to think and
communicate. The bottom line was: if your ideas can’t be drawn, they
can’t be done.
Visual
thinking is a vital skill for anyone, who generates new ideas, communicate
them, and collaborates with others to realise them. This is also what this
book, “Visual Thinking” emphasises. And to practice what it preaches, the book
breaks down the whole process - from skilling, templating to actualising – into
simple steps.
It also tries
to get rid of your fear to draw and gives you lessons in basic skills and
guidelines to draw. The section "Draw!" quite literally draws
out the basic concepts and techniques involved in sketching. Best practices,
models, templates - they all form the foundation for the things talked about in
the rest of the book.
This book
will be a great help in developing your own style using
different materials, colours and typography. It also teaches you how
to make use of metaphors in communicating concepts and ideas.
The Visual
Storytelling section has lots of fresh ideas. The last major section on
"Visual thinking in a business setting" is, what I think will be most
useful to readers. It provides a great framework for systematically going through
the discovery, ideation and design phases of a project.
This is a
great handbook for visual thinking. I would recommend this book to anyone,
whether a designer or not, to level up his/her sketching skills for
brainstorming, or to enhance client presentation techniques using sketches and
drawings.
