Located
in Perm, Russia, café Rolls Novinka is designed as a youthful space, with an
aim to create an engaging and animated ambience for its users.
Refurbishing
an existing café, Saranin Artemy of Studio ALLARTSDESIGN conceives a space
that, although conceptualised around the youth, has the flexibility to
accommodate people of all ages. Planned as an elongated rectangle, the space is
divided primarily into two parts - the bar and main hall with the seating.

Whilst the bar stands as an imposing entity at one end of the restaurant; its staggered dual-level counter physically dividing the space between the visitors and the bartenders, the hall is divided into zones that create intimate pockets within the large plan. The screened partitions, fabricated from turquoise painted metal rods, run from floor to ceiling, and aid in creating a dialogue between the different zones through their criss-cross patterned lattice.
The
seating itself offers a variety of options, ranging from snug corner tables to
lounge areas, to informal bar stools. Furthermore, acknowledging the historical
reference of Perm as an industrial city, littered with aviation, shipbuilding
and chemical factories, an enclosed “aviator room” is included, which enables
private and exclusive gatherings.
The
cafe is a canvas for material explorations, as manifested in the elements of
the restaurant. A modern chandelier, created from metal tubes and running 10
metres across is mounted with a lamp on each end to illuminate the interiors.
The doors are crafted out of metal and corrugated glass, which adds a wonderful
texture to the space. The colour scheme, primarily consisting of earthen
colours is compensated with colourful upholstery and art works.
The
Rolls Novinka cafe is a dynamic space that invites its patrons to experience
and engage in a holistic contemporary environment, encouraging camaraderie.
