Gelatoscopio, a
Mexican ice cream shop, is designed by a dessert and design-loving duo - Héctor Esrawe and Ar. Ignacio Cadena…
In the architect’s own
words, “Gelatoscopio is born out of the imaginary and the surprise for the
unexpected” and seeks to offer a unique experience to everyone in a fantastical
reality.
Ice cream is known to
make us happy; it activates the ‘happy regions’ of our brain. And what better
way to enhance and connect with these emotions than a fantastic reality of
flavours, textures and aromas. With its contrasting ice cream flavours and a
gastronomic concept that promotes freedom and discovery of the world and the
individual, Gelatoscopio is a journey of the imagination through the senses
that go beyond the visual.
Gelatoscopio becomes
an experimental medium of the new and unknown that detonates joy and happiness
in a utopian scenario. It evokes emotions and transports one to memorable
moments, creating an authentic experience.
This wonderful setting
is inspired by romantic, futuristic machines and achieved by a long curvilinear
metallic wall finished in bright turquoise. Punctured with circular lenses,
magnifying glasses, kaleidoscopes, mirrors, and windows, the entire wall invites one to
observe and discover new worlds that amplify, distort and alter. They act as
windows into alternate realms, effectively transporting one to whimsical
places, altering their perception of reality, of the known. The circular
punctures also embody the functional aspects of the ice cream shop,
incorporating menus, graphics and service windows. Gelatoscopio actuates a
pleasant dialogue between an individual and the entire composition.
