Fostering inclusion, wellbeing and fitness, Grimshaw Architects’
design for Al Farjan Recreational Sports Facilities propounds a distinct style
quotient alongside thoughtful design...
Won through a competition by the Qatar Olympic
Committee, Grimshaw Architects’ approach to the “community sports facility and
playground with a twofold mission: enrich the social activities of the neighbourhood
and promote the culture of sport to the public”, is inclusive, with the aim to promote
sports awareness and enhance the popularity of different types of sports.
The multipurpose sports venue encompasses requisite sports fields, an outdoor
children’s playground, public realm landscaping and amenities, and the like;
the concept and design recognizing that the responsibilities of this project
are far reaching and profoundly important.

With playgrounds as the highly accessible, informal public space for young people, families and sporting enthusiasts alike, various elements of the facility are centered on the social hub, a cafĂ© and children’s playground with elegant fabric canopies radiating outward to provide cover and shade.
Subtle topography allows for changing views as one navigates the site and
allows for the integration of park and sporting elements into the undulating
landscape without encroaching on the space required for regular playing fields.
