Stop Motion, a cinema hall designed by Virginia Lung and Ajax Law is inspired by stop-motion animation, a technique that has a long history in film-making…

A design rises above excellence, when it transcends the boundaries of aesthetics and functionality and sets out to express the intent with which it was designated. Creative leads of ‘One Plus Partnership’, an award winning interior design studio, demonstrate their adroitness and acumen of designing spaces, driven by specific themes that celebrate the inspiration and the underlying intent. They have chiselled the Stop Motion cinema to perfection!

The design attempts to draw an analogy with the beginning of cinema, where an object was positioned and controlled between individually photographed frames that appeared to be in motion, when shown as a continuous sequence. The interior of the cinema animates this process of film making, where frames at various levels appear to unite, so as to produce an illusion of a moving picture.

The counter made in stone, is split into parts and aligned are various angles, inspired by characters in a science fiction movie that disintegrate and unite to result in a singular entity. The ceiling comprises a collection of light boxes or slides, all in varying shapes and sizes; randomly arranged but appearing to be flying towards the same direction to result in a cohesive form. The walls and other lighting fixtures are also designed in a similar manner so as to narrate the art of one-time film making by appearing in parts that could blend and result in a single image.

The design, its function and materials appear to be incidental in this project. The space is designed with the intent to narrate the art of film making through its colours and overall aesthetic. The design is as dynamic as a film set and evidently expresses the essence of cinema.

A creative expression lends a share of its designer’s perspective to the audience. As I understand, its significance strengthens if it reaches to communicate with its users.
