Colour Expert Ar. Emmanuelle Moureaux brings you some tips and tricks on how to use colour to energise your spaces and fill them with joie de vivre!

"I use colours as three-dimensional elements, like layers, in order to create spaces, not as a finishing touch applied to surfaces," says Emmanuelle explaining that she always aims at emoting through colours; whether it is architecture or an art piece, her creations make people want to see colours, touch colours, and feel colours with their senses.

Working with the very essence of colour, 24-7-365, Emmanuelle believes that the overflowing effects of colour in space show that colours can give more than a space - a space with additional layers of human emotion!

Our generic understanding of colour relationships tells us:
Yellow is the colour that the eye sees the fastest, and Green is the ultimate pacifier; here are a few common associations:
Blue arouses feelings of freshness, coolness and relaxation.
In lighter hues, blue is airy and open while dark blues represent wealth, strength and respect evoking the feelings of reassurance in individuals.
Purple is a noble colour in its deepest values, yet it can be flowery and refreshing in pale violet colourings.
Soft yellows can be cheering and make individuals feel sunny.
Bright yellow used as an accent attracts attention and helps to brighten a room.
Often associated with nature, green is both relaxing and reassuring.
Pale yellow-greens conjure images of growth while deep greens are associated with status and wealth.
Red attracts attention, causes excitement, and even raises blood pressure.
Intense red is stimulating; however it can also be distracting in large amounts.
Orange can be ideal for attracting attention to details.
Black and White are colours of contradictions that rely largely on the effect of the other colours used with each of them.

Emmanuelle takes you further with these 5 hands-on ‘tips and tricks’ that spell a sure-shot success!

TIP 1: Make the base colour of your room white. The most important colour is white; it is the only colour that makes other colours appear beautiful.

TIP 2: Not only use one colour but a combination of colours. Using a lot of colours is essential to give rhythm, depth to the space, and of course emotions.

TIP 3: If you have several rooms, you can choose one colour per room (ex: yellow for the kitchen, green for the bedroom, pink for the bathroom etc...) and paint one of the wall in this colour in each room.

TIP 4: To achieve a multicolour atmosphere, choose one element of your room (ex: one wall, one furniture) and use a rainbow palette on it, keeping the others parts of your room neutral.

TIP 5: Don’t be afraid to use colour! Colour is not only beautiful, but colour can give energy, can make people smile, can make people happy.

Great article on color!! Wonderful pictorial samples. I would like to add that Yellow is a very important color, the psychological effect on people is perceived as to give us warmth, allows to concentrate and a good conductor on our left side of the brain for problem solving! There are other great attributes to this color and it brightens any room and our spirits!
