What does an architect have to do with showcasing the journey of
technological growth? Well, check out the story of Samsung’s Galaxy S8 ingeniously
translated into an exhibit by Zaha Hadid Architects...
‘Unconfined: The Galaxy S8
Design’ showing from April 4-9, 2017 at the Milan Design Week, is collaboration
between Samsung, Zaha Hadid Architects, and Universal Everything, which
expresses the design philosophy behind the Galaxy S8 and S8+, in the form of
digital installations.
Designed on a principle that focuses on uniting design, technology and
experience, Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and its explicative installation is created to
communicate efficiently with the user. Eliciting inspiration from the formation
of a convex meniscus on a metal surface, and analysing the associative theory
of surface tension, the S8 replicates this understanding in glass and
aluminium.
The exhibition is conceptualised as a manifestation of the design
principles, simultaneously showcasing the physical features of the mobile.
Divided into two zones, the installation takes the users through a three-dimensional
journey of the sensorial geometries of the S8, with the aid of curved screens
and digital graphics. The large, fluid screens in Zone 1 are projected with
graphics from the device and give the users a mesmeric walk through the design
attributes, which rely profoundly on nature and its organic forms.
"We often look at the logic
and coherence of nature’s systems, when we are working to create environments
that seamlessly connect form and function using innovative designs and
technologies. This research is integrated within every aspect of the
installation's design.” –Patrik Schumacher, ZHA
Zone 2, on the other hand is a means for the users to understand the
physical attributes of the phone and explore the possibilities offered by a thoroughly
researched interpretation of technological possibilities.
“The Galaxy S8 and S8+ showcase
our commitment to meaningful innovation…. with function not limited by form.”
- Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, Mobile
Communications Business at Samsung Electronics
The perceptible, smooth and elegantly proportioned Galaxy S8 is a
pragmatic marriage between contemporary industrial design and congruous
aesthetics instilled within the fundamentals of a neutral mobile device, which
serves all age groups unequivocally.
